Self Propelled Film Festival
adjective moving or able to move without external propulsion or agency.
In an age of convenience and speed, where trains and cars drive themselves and gourmet food is prepared in 3 minutes, we are throwing it back to the good old days. When moving across landscapes by our own steam, stopping to enjoy the views, make camp or change direction was the only agenda.
With this in mind, we at Ultimate Direction South Africa are stoked to launch the Self Propelled Film Festival. A celebration of the dirtbags, the outcasts, the wanderers and the self-propelled.
What are we looking for:
We want to take 3 of the best short films that depict what it means to be self-propelled and screen them at our inaugural Self Propelled Film Festival. The Festival will take place at the Labia theatres in Cape Town on Thursday 5th March 2020.
The Grand Prize winner will be selected from those Top 3 films.
Criteria for Film Submissions:
Only films shot in a minimum of 1080 HD resolution will be selected.
Videos must be centered around running, hiking, walking, swimming, climbing, bike packing, paddling etc. Basically, anything that involves human power to propel yourself forward.
We will only be accepting films that have been shot and edited in the period of 7 October 2019 and 31 January 2020. Preference will be given to films that haven't been seen before, i.e. not live on Youtube. (See How To Submit Your Film below for info on how to submit your film.)
The Festival is open to international submissions. If you are selected as one of the Top 3 videos you will have to attend the Film night on Thursday 5th March 2020 in Cape Town. You will need to be there to claim the Grand Prize if your film is selected as the winning film. If you are unable to attend the night for any legitimate reasoning a friend or family member can accept the prize on your behalf. This will need to be arranged with us at least 2 weeks before the event.
You must own the usage rights for any music used in your films, any films submitted without the relevant music licenses will be immediately disqualified.
The films don't have to feature Ultimate Direction products. It’s not about the amount of gear, or lack of gear you use, it's about the adventure. The films will be judged solely on the Self-Propelled theme and the various criteria listed below.
How Will The Top 3 Films Be Chosen:
After the submission cut off date (31st Jan 2020) we will choose the Top 10 films from all the submissions. The Top 10 will be judged by a panel of independent judges. The judges, who will be introduced over the next few weeks, have years of experience making films for a number of brands and festivals in the outdoor industry. The Top 3 finalists will be selected from the Top 10 presented to the judges.
The Grand Prize winner will then be selected from the Top 3 finalists, the winner will only be announced at the Film Festival screened at the Labia theatres on Thursday 5th March 2020 in Cape Town.
Criteria That The Submissions Will Be Judged On:
Story Structure (does it make sense)
The Films relationship with the music used
How the film relates to the "Self-Propelled" theme
How To Submit Your Film:
We want those attending the Film Festival at the Labia to see films that they haven't seen before. We are not fans of showing videos everyone has seen 100 times on YouTube already, seriously, what is the point of that? Therefore we will only be accepting "secret" submissions.
Your video will need to be uploaded to your personal Cloud Drive (Google Drive, Dropbox etc). The video needs to be 1080 HD resolution and not higher. If your video is shot in 4k and is selected as a finalist we will arrange to get the 4k version from you for the Film Night at the Labia theatres.
Once it is uploaded on your Cloud-based drive, email the "shareable link" to email@example.com
Throughout the submission time, we will reserve the right to make short snippets/trailers from the films being submitted as a way of showcasing the work that is coming in. We will not show the full films.
The prize is structured as a "winner takes all", there will be no prizes for 2nd and third apart from having your film screened on the event night at the Labia. The Grand Prize for the winning submission is set at R20 000 cash.
